Many
studies have proven that cranberries have several health benefits
due to its unique combination of proanthocyandins and
antioxidants. Cranberry proanthocyanidins contain a highly
singular structural feature not present in other foods that
contain proanthocyandins, such as grape and apple juices, that
accounts for its microbial anti-adhesion property, allowing it to
limit the accumulation of bacteria on cell surfaces. This results
in cranberries having a preventive role in diseases, which range
from inhibiting the E. Coli bacteria that cause most urinary tract
infections to decreasing oral bacteria (streptococci) on tooth
surfaces, thus slowing dental plaque development, as well as
retarding the antibiotic-resistant H. pylori, a bacteria that
causes stomach ulcers. Researchers have found that cranberries
have the highest total antioxidant capacity per gram amongst
common fruits and this exceptionally high antioxidant ability
promotes general cell health by reducing the presence of free
radicals in the body. Studies by the William Harvey Research
Institute suggest that cranberry juice could be as good for the
heart as red wine, improving cardiovascular health by preventing
LDL cholesterol from being oxidized (oxidation of LDL cholesterol
is believed to contribute to atheroschlerosis) and increasing the
level of HDL (good cholesterol) in the bloodstream.
The health
benefits of wheat - which ranges from helping maintain a healthy
body weight to reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes -
depend entirely on the form in which you eat it. The organic whole
wheat flour present in our bread is a very good source of dietary
fiber, manganese and magnesium (a mineral that acts as a co-factor
for enzymes involved in the body's use of glucose and insulin
secretion), as well as containing nearly twice as much vitamin B1,
B2, B3, E, folic acid, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, copper and iron
as compared to bleached, white flour – the reason why laws exist
that require the “enrichment” of processed flour using
unnatural means to replace the vitamins and minerals lost.

Understanding Trans Fats
(Health Day News) -- Trans fats, also called hydrogenated fats, are
man-made compounds, that are made from processed liquid oils, common in margarine and
shortening (butter). These harmful fats will raise bad
cholesterol, and could lower a person's good cholesterol levels.
Because these fats are so thick and stiff, they can also clog up
arteries and blood vessels, which can lead to heart attack or
stroke, says the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Trans fats are commonly found in processed foods such as potato chips, cookies, doughnuts, cakes and many fast
foods. You can avoid trans fats by choosing natural, healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean meats, and whole grain breads and cereals.
Check ingredient labels for hydrogenated fats, and try to avoid
those foods.
